The Week I Stopped Writing My Own Code

One week I handed every coding task to AI engineering agents. Here's what shipped, what surprised me, and what I still own myself.

It started as an experiment. I had a backlog of 14 tasks: a new API endpoint, three bug fixes, a performance audit, two UI components, a database migration script, and some test coverage gaps. Normal week for a solo founder writing code alone.

I decided not to write a single line of code myself.

Instead, I assigned every task to agents from the Engineering department and spent the week doing what I'd been putting off: thinking about the business itself.

What I Handed Off and What Came Back

The Backend Architect got the API endpoint and the migration script. I wrote a clear spec: inputs, outputs, edge cases, error handling. Four hours later, the endpoint worked, the OpenAPI docs were written, and the migration script included rollback logic I hadn't asked for. That's how a senior backend engineer thinks, not how I was speccing tasks.

The Frontend Developer handled the two UI components. I described the behavior and linked the design reference. The output matched the design system without me specifying every token — it read the existing codebase first and used what was already there.

The Code Reviewer went through all three bug fixes before anything shipped. It caught a race condition I had missed. That bug would have caused a data inconsistency in production, the kind I'd have spent a day debugging at 11pm.

The Performance Optimizer audited the slow pages I'd flagged. It came back with specifics: three queries each adding 200-400ms, a missing index, two N+1 problems, with exact line references.

I reviewed every output. Everything shipped by Thursday.

What I Did With the Time

Monday: I wrote a proper spec for a feature I'd been postponing for three months. Not because I was blocked, but because there was always something more urgent to build myself.

Tuesday: I did six customer calls in one day. I almost never do that when I'm in the middle of a coding sprint. Those conversations told me more about what the product needed than any sprint planning session I'd run.

Wednesday: I reviewed all agent outputs, made decisions about what to ship and what to revise, and drafted specs for the next sprint.

Thursday: I started working on pricing strategy. Something I'd been deferring because it felt less concrete than writing code.

By Friday I had shipped a full week of engineering work and done the kind of thinking that moves a business forward. Both in the same week. That hadn't happened before.

What Stays With You

The agents don't make product decisions. They don't know which bug matters most, which feature to cut, or whether the new API should be REST or GraphQL. Those calls are yours.

The Code Reviewer can catch a race condition. It can't tell you whether the feature that introduced it should exist at all.

The Backend Architect writes a clean migration. It doesn't know whether this is the right moment to change the schema, given what customers told you yesterday.

Judgment is the job. Execution is not.

Who Should Start Here

If you're a solo founder who codes, and most of your week goes to writing production code yourself, try one week like this.

Start with the Engineering department. Assign the next three tasks that feel like routine work: bug fixes, refactors, test coverage, documentation. Keep architecture decisions and anything that needs product context in your own hands. Review every output before it ships.

See what you do with the recovered time.

If you're not technical, the same principle applies across any department. The question isn't whether AI agents write better code than you. The question is whether writing code yourself is the best use of the founder's seat.

The Honest Part

Setup took a few hours. Writing good specs takes practice, and your first few tasks will need more revision than later ones. The agents do better with clear, specific input than with vague briefs.

There's also an adjustment that's harder to quantify. If building things is what made you feel productive, handing it off feels like doing less. That shift takes longer than setting up the software.

But a week in, I didn't miss the coding. I missed having done more weeks like that one sooner.
